Vadim Gagin, a psychiatrist at the psychiatry department of the Human Brain Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, stated in an interview with socialbites.ca that there are more and more diverse addictions with each passing day.

“In the ICD, the International Classification of Diseases, and the DSM, the American Classification of Mental Disorders, their lists are updated with each new revision. Addiction can also be to conditionally useful things – work or sports. The more interests and temptations a person has, the more options there are for developing addiction,” Gagin explained.

According to the psychiatrist, addiction does not always occur as a way of coping with stress or anxiety. Some people are prone to their occurrence.

“In this case, they can switch from one type of addiction to another. If such a person wants to get rid of a certain thing, they can get an addiction of a completely different nature. For example, if a person wants to quit smoking, they may turn to sports excessively. However, most of these addictions are treated with psychotherapy,” he said. .
