Researchers at Indiana University have found that breastfeeding cookies do not increase milk production, but can make it harder to lose weight after giving birth. The results of the research were published at: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
The study included 176 US women who exclusively breastfed healthy two-month-old babies. One group ate a serving of commercially available breastfeeding cookies daily, while the other group ate a serving of regular cookies. In weekly interviews, women reported the amount of milk they expressed using a hospital-grade breast pump.
Data analysis showed that lactation biscuit consumption had no significant effect on milk production.
Scientists believe that consumers should be wary of such products; spending, excessive consumption of fat and sugar from cookies, and reducing consumption of healthier foods. Any food or supplement that claims to improve health needs to be backed by high-quality research to be effective.
