In Italy, the government has passed a bill banning the use of lab-grown synthetic products, including artificial meat. It has been reported Times.
If the bill is finally passed, those who export or import synthetic food can be prosecuted. They will face fines of up to 60,000 euros and a ban on the operation of the enterprise.
Italian Health Minister Horazio Schillaci said at a press conference that Italy’s decision to ban the practice was “based on precautionary principles”.
“There is no scientific study yet on the effects of synthetic products. We want to protect our nation’s heritage and our agriculture based on the Mediterranean diet,” he said.
Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida also noted that the purpose of the bill is to “preserve our culture and traditions, including food and wine”. Laboratory products do not, in our view, guarantee the quality, well-being and preservation of our culture and traditions.
Opposition and animal rights groups criticized the move.
