Short and irregular sleep can lead to chronic high blood pressure. In this respect informs TASS with reference to Flinders University.

First of all, middle-aged men (30 to 50 years old) are subject to this trend. At the same time, it is enough to reduce sleep by an hour or change the mode by a third to achieve a negative effect.

More than 12,000 people participated in the nine-month Flinders University study, 88% of whom were middle-aged men. Each gave the scientists detailed daily records of their health status and data on blood pressure indicators. “We found a link between the development of arterial hypertension and sleep disturbance, and a reduction in its duration. This suggests that we should not only monitor how many hours we sleep, but also adhere to the most regular resting schedule,” said Hannah Scott, one of the study’s authors.

Numerically, with a 30-minute decrease in sleep, the risk of developing hypertension increases by 32%. More serious disruptions, such as reducing sleep to less than six hours, not only increase the risk of chronic high blood pressure, but also have a complex negative impact on the cardiovascular system.

In the future, the authors plan to repeat the study by expanding the list of monitored health indicators.
