American scientists from the Health Sciences Center at the University of Texas at San Antonio have developed an innovative CPACC drug that allows you to eat and not get fat: it suppresses the activity of the MRS2 gene, which transfers magnesium to the mitochondria of cells. Therefore, glucose is broken down less efficiently, and its use does not lead to weight gain, which was confirmed by testing the drug on mice. Although the results of the study seem quite promising, in reality the use of CRASS will most likely not only lead to overeating, but also will not have the best effect on the functioning of the whole organism, including the brain, Pavel Volchkov, head of the MIPT genome engineering laboratory, told Gazeta.ru in the statement.
“The problem with overeating is psychological, not metabolic. People overeat not because they are hungry, but because they enjoy eating. In the experiment, the food given to the mice was dosed: both the mice receiving the drug and the control group received the same amount of food. And what will keep people in life from eating less? “When they take this drug, they will only eat more, as they will continue to enjoy the food,” Volchkov said.
Volchkov also added that humans, like most other living things, were evolutionarily adapted to get energy from glucose. In the oxygen phase of energy metabolism in cells, 36 ATP molecules are formed from one molecule of glucose, a compound necessary for energy processes in cells. The use of CPACC bypasses this step, resulting in only glucose glycolysis, resulting in the formation of only 2 ATP molecules.
“ATP is the universal fuel for our body. We can consume anything, but it will all eventually be processed into ATP. And the essence of this work is to find a way to consume food less efficiently and simply live on glycolysis. But we must understand that suppressing mitochondrial activity in principle is not very helpful. The most effective inhibitor of mitochondrial activity is hydrocyanic acid, which almost irreversibly inhibits the operation of the electron transport chain. And everyone knows what this leads to, ”Volchkov explained.
Also, according to the scientist, the use of this drug can cause a buildup of lactic acid in the body, which will cause pain and will not have the best effect on the brain, which requires the most ATP.
