For the first time, researchers managed to advance 70 kilometers into the Botovskaya Cave. This was expressed by Alexander Osintsev, a speleologist from the Russian Geographical Society.
“40. we came back from the expedition and the length of Botovskaya [пещеры] now it is 70 km and 414 m,” said the scientist. Before that (for 2019), cavers managed to explore only 69.5 kilometers, and in 1992, scientists entered only 6 kilometers. It’s also of interest to biologists: skeletons of bears were found in the cave, and ancient remains of cubs were found for the first time in 2019.
Botovskaya Cave is an important geological monument of Russia, located on the territory of the Zhigalovsky district of the Irkutsk region, not far from Lake Baikal. It was opened in 1946. The cave is a complex system of passages in a sandstone thick layer of limestone. Currently, scientists are looking for additional exits that would make the cave more suitable for further study. The total length of the geological formation may exceed 100 kilometers.
