El Barrio is the artistic name of Andalusian pop, flamenco and rock singer-songwriter José Luis Figuereo Franco (Cádiz, 1970) from the 70s-80s. His style was born from a combination of inspirations in Medina Azahara, Triana, Alameda and Manolo Caracol.
His art with the guitar since childhood has allowed him to accompany famous bailaores such as Antonio Canales and Sara Baras on stage. But he got bored of the guitar and, while earning his living as a welder, decided to send a demo to a small record label that allowed him to record ‘Yo sueño flamenco’ in 1996.
That’s when he chooses ‘El Barrio’ as a name in honor of the Barrio de Santa María and dons his legendary black hat, a gift from his mother. After this album, “Mal de amores” (1999), “Ángel malherido” (2003), “Las playas de invierno” (2005), “La voz de mi silencio” (2007) or “Son of Levant’ (2014).
