Projectiles containing depleted uranium are not considered nuclear weapons, but pose a serious danger to the area and people living on them. About this in a conversation with FAN reported military expert, retired colonel Viktor Litovkin. Earlier, London announced its intention to transfer such ammunition to Ukraine. The interlocutor of the organization emphasized that the ecological disaster in the polluted area could last for decades.
“The main danger of such shells is that they leave radioactive dust in the area and eat the soil, as it cannot be caught by anything and neutralized. In addition, grass, vegetables, fruits grow, animals feed on this grass and people already feed on them. It’s a kind of evolving food chain, and then people get deadly diseases,” Litovkin explained.
At the same time, he noted that the effectiveness of such shells is really high – they are more powerful than sub-caliber, high-explosive and cumulative ammunition.
21 March British Deputy Defense Secretary Annabelle Goldie statedThe UK will supply depleted uranium munitions to Ukraine, in addition to a fleet of Challenger 2 battle tanks.
