Ukrainian Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko said the country’s authorities are considering the option of demolishing the monument to Mykola Shchors, the red commander of the Civil War, in Kiev. Reported by RBC-Ukraine.

As Tkachenko clarified, they propose to remove the figure of Shchors himself and let go of the horse he was riding, since, according to the minister, he was “recognized by all art critics as an outstanding artistic horse.”

Nikolai Shchors commanded the Ukrainian Red Guard rebel formations, was the head of the Red Army division during the Civil War. He died at the age of 24 in a battle near Zhytomyr in 1919. The Shchors monument is located at the intersection of Simon Petliura Street and Taras Shevchenko Boulevard, it is an equestrian statue made of bronze with a total height of about 14 meters.
