A trimaran of Russian circumnavigators sank in the Pacific Ocean during their evacuation. It has been reported TASS March 20, the head of the expedition is Evgeny Kovalevsky. Initially, it was reported that the cargo ship, which saved the Russian passengers, managed to get its trimarans in tow.
The evacuation of the crew took place in harsh storm conditions. The captain of the ship Sounion volunteered to help the Russians. He barely managed to find a drifting trimaran and lured the crew aboard, warning that the inflatable ship had to be abandoned.
An attempt was made to save the ship though, it was tied with a tow rope. All of this happened due to bad weather late at night, when the trimaran broke off the cargo ship.
Kovalevsky and his partner Stanislav Berezkin sought help on March 16 due to a broken steering wheel. This happened during the transition from mainland Chile to Easter Island.
They were assisted by the Navy of the Republic of South America. Along with the trimaran, the travelers lost all the equipment and items in it.
The Russians said they plan to resume their circumnavigation in April.
