Russian scientists invented a polymer substrate to stimulate the growth of wheat seeds. This was reported by the press service of NUST MISIS.

The material is based on polylactide and poly-3-hydroxybutyrate. Natural and synthetic (nitrile butadiene) rubber was added to them by electrospinning. This material turns into an ultra-thin filament when electrostatic forces are applied to a stream of electrically charged polymer solution. This causes the biomaterial to stretch before it solidifies. The thickness of this thread can be changed by changing the parameters of the liquid and electric field.

As a result, the substrate material is obtained from fibers that serve not only as a substrate for wheat, but also as a source of nutrients. Polylactide poly-3-hydroxybutyrate is biodegradable polymers and is vulnerable to soil bacteria, so the use of such substrates does not harm the environment. Their complete destruction occurs 4-6 months after planting.

The efficacy of the substrate was tested during experiments with the Yubileinaya 100 variety. “On polymer substrates, the height of wheat sprouts is, on average, 1 cm higher than in control samples. The mass and length of roots are significantly higher in seedlings growing on nonwoven materials. Because the substrates themselves degrade under the influence of water and wheat enzymes, accelerating germination,” said Yulia Tertyshnaya, one of the authors of the study. is a supplier of carbon dioxide and heat to the seeds,” he says.

The scientists hope their technology could be used in agriculture to increase the productivity of wheat cultivation.
