Scientists from the University of Oslo reported that women diagnosed with brain death could give birth to children and suggested using them as surrogate mothers. Description published Journal of Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics.
Pregnancy and childbirth are associated with great risks to women’s health and lives. In addition, there are absolute contraindications for pregnancy and childbirth. A new report proposes a solution, such as using brain-dead women as proxies.
The idea first came up with Israeli researcher Rosalie Behr in 2000. He noted that while the concept of whole body donation can be psychologically disturbing, many of the ethical issues that may be associated with it apply to traditional organ donation as well.
The report’s authors also believe that if some people consider donating their entire body to have a child in the event of brain death, then they should be given the opportunity.
