Adequate strength training is not only dangerous for most herniated discs and protrusions, but can significantly improve the condition of the spine as well as quality of life. The expert and mentor of the Evotren training center, Maxim Oborin, told socialbites.ca about this.
“Older people are often afraid to train because of spinal problems: osteochondrosis, hernias, protrusions. All this can really be a contraindication for certain loads, but we are not talking about the complete refusal of activity. On the contrary, often such conditions are an indicator for training, ”Oborin explained.
The trainer noted that an insufficient load can lead to an increase in the inflammatory process. However, if the person does the exercises in a quality and controlled manner, the condition of the spine can be improved. It is also important to teach the brain to control movement, often with the help of exercises that activate several muscle groups at the same time. For this, beginners need the help of a coach.
Oborin added that older women should not be afraid to exercise because of incontinence. Insufficient loads and incorrect technique can really lead to uncontrolled muscle tension, including pelvic floor muscle deterioration. A competent trainer will build the load so that the symptoms of incontinence do not progress and can be alleviated at the same time, so incontinence is not a reason to refuse training.
“There are not so many absolute medical contraindications for training. Sometimes even people with cancer can benefit greatly from exercise. Age is not a contraindication for exercise. My practice had both men and women under the age of 76. Someone came in with the request “I want to play more with my grandchildren”. Training helped them increase endurance, muscle strength, improve the functioning of the cardiovascular system, and most importantly, restore the quality of life, ”said Oborin.
