When choosing an electric or conventional – manual toothbrush, you must first pay attention to the characteristics of your teeth. Therefore, electric toothbrushes are not recommended for people with too much fillings, severe gum disease, and pacemakers, while manual toothbrushes can poorly remove plaque and lead to cavities and gum damage. Murat Nasyrov, candidate of medical sciences, dentist and author’s head of dentistry at the Nasyrov Clinic, told socialbites.ca.
According to the expert, many dental problems are caused by choosing the wrong toothbrush. That’s why you should always consult your dentist before purchasing.
“Electric toothbrushes are not recommended because of the risk of damaging them in the presence of multiple fillings, dentures, pacemakers, wedge-shaped defects, as well as severe gum disease. A manual toothbrush should be chosen more carefully to choose the one that is suitable for its intended use: a soft brush does not clean plaque well and causes cavities, and too hard bristles can damage the gums,” the dentist warned.
Another significant disadvantage of conventional brushes is the need to independently regulate the degree of pressure, which can cause difficulties for people with joint pain and weak hands.
In addition, the doctor reminded that no type of brush can cope with the cleaning of interdental spaces.
“The advantage of electric toothbrushes is that they remove food residues more efficiently and require less effort. And no, the constant use of such a device will not lead to erosion of the enamel and will not cause gum disease, and the nozzle will not rub plaque under the gums,” said Murat Nasyrov.
The specialist noted that electric brushes are suitable for any type of enamel and are indicated for mandatory use by people with weak hands in the presence of periodontal disease and a large amount of plaque on the teeth. However, numerous studies have shown that the cleaning quality of electric and conventional toothbrushes is the same when used correctly.
“However, the best way to brush your teeth is to use an electric toothbrush and a manual toothbrush together. For example, for distant teeth it is better to use a regular brush, for front teeth – an electric one. In addition, a mechanical toothbrush removes food residues better, while an electric toothbrush effectively removes soft plaque that a normal accessory cannot remove. Flossing will help clean the interdental spaces,” the candidate of science concluded.
