In Yakutia, scientists from the North-Eastern Federal University Mammoth Museum performed an autopsy of an ancient bison. The carcass was found in the summer of 2022. writes about it interfax with reference to the university’s press service.

Maxim Cheprasova, head of the NEFU Mammoth Museum, spoke about the ancient animal found. Researchers believe that this is a young individual 1.5-2 years old. When he died has not yet been determined.

It turned out that the bison found in 2009 and 2010 is 8-9 thousand years old. They died at a biological age of about 2 months and 4-4.5 years.

“We can say that the new find is of intermediate biological age, so we can trace the ontogeny of the ancient bison,” explained Maxim Cheprasov.

Last year, the bison was discovered in the new Khaastaakh region by local residents of the Verkhoyansk region of Yakutia. The head, forelimbs and part of the chest were preserved from the carcass.

Soft tissue, muscle, skin, wool samples were taken from the individual and the brain was removed.

An expedition is planned for the summer to the bison’s location. Scientists hope to find other fossils there

During the autopsy, samples were taken for microbiological, histological, cellular, radiocarbon studies. Analyzes will be carried out in various scientific institutions of the country.
