“The issue is very painful, but extremely important for families in similar situations. We discussed this issue in the meetings we held with the relatives of the children who died in the group in the regions, and we reflected it in the first report we presented to the President with the legislative decision.”
According to him, it is not easy to confirm the death of a person in hostile conditions, and the “long and confusing bureaucratic procedure” can deprive the families of deceased soldiers of long periods of grace and other necessary measures of social support. .
“According to the current rules, to confirm the death of a missing soldier, it is necessary to wait two years from the end of hostilities. In order for the fighter to be declared dead, it will be sufficient to take the statement of the commander who saw his death.”
In the absence of direct witnesses to the death of a soldier, it takes no more than six months for him to be recognized as missing. Family members will be able to initiate a fighter’s recognition as dead procedure through the court, after obtaining missing person status.
Turchak noted that the new regulation will affect all missing military personnel cases after February 24, 2022.
