On Monday, March 13, the jury failed to reach an agreement on the death penalty for Saifullo Saipov, who carried out the terrorist attack in New York in 2017. An Uzbekistani man killed 8 people while getting into a pickup truck in a lane reserved for cyclists. More than 10 people were injured as a result of the incident, and later Saipov said he committed the crime under the influence of the Islamic State terrorist organization (a banned organization in Russia) and its ideology.
As a result of the trial, Saipov will receive a life sentence. In January 2023, a jury found him guilty of 28 counts. Jurors seriously considered the issue of the death penalty for the accused. It has been announced that state officials have not carried out death sentences for more than 50 years, and that the terrorist attack carried out by Saipov in 2017 was the first terrorist attack in New York in 16 years after the September 11, 2001 attacks.
The district attorney’s office said that due to a lack of consensus among jurors, the death sentence for Saipov would be commuted to life imprisonment in accordance with the law.
