I adopted a baby cat into my home. My friend’s cat has given birth to several kittens and I’ve decided to embark on a pet-owning adventure. The problem is that the animal does not obey and does not seem to hear me when I call to it. I’m starting to think he’s deaf as writing, is that possible?

Any animal like us can have hearing problems and be deaf. In fact, different studies have concluded that cats with white hair and blue eyes, for example, are almost four times more likely to be born deaf than others. The problem with animals like cats or dogs is that when this happens they cannot use one of their most valuable tools, their hearing. However, before concluding that the animal has a hearing problem, the first thing our vet would do would be to rule out other possibilities. To do this, he will perform a complete neurological examination, which will help him understand whether the deafness in question is actually hiding a viral or parasitic disease. If the result is finally negative, it is very likely that there is a partial or complete decrease in the animal’s hearing capacity. For this reason, it is best to go to your veterinarian as soon as possible so that he or she can make a complete and adequate assessment.
