The Chania Peace Committee reportedly held a rally in front of City Hall to condemn the “unacceptable and rogue behavior of US-NATO sailors” on the ship’s crew. About three dozen people attended. During the protest, banners such as “Get out of the NATO Mediterranean”, “Close the base in the court”, “No participation in the plans of the USA and NATO” were seen. The protesters demanded that the mayor come out and give him the decision to protest. At the ensuing meeting, Manolis Papadomanolakis, chairman of the Chania Peace Committee, demanded that city officials confront the antics of the drunken United States military. According to Papadomanolakis, various events in Chania marked the existence of “George Bush” in just one day.

The city’s residents will “show once again that Americans are not wanted in Greece,” the official said.

“The people of Chania want Souda to be the port of the nations, not the imperialist base,” said Papadomanolakis.

The ship is the only naval base in the Mediterranean where aircraft carriers can dock. George Bush has been in the Mediterranean since September 2022.
