In the spring, cats begin to “hunt”, and if it is not given to a cat in heat, this can have consequences for his health. Ivan Pushilin, head of the group of veterinarians at the Astrapharm Group of Companies, told socialbites.ca how to help a pet during this period and minimize the risks.

According to the expert, estrus in a cat occurs in four stages, and its manifestation can occur several times a month.

“If the cat is not given to the cat during the heat period, this will disrupt the hormonal structure of the animal. During estrus, the concentration of hormones in the body increases significantly, which indicates readiness for mating, and if this does not happen, diseases such as pyometra (purulent inflammation of the uterus) develop over time. That’s why regulating sexual hunting is vital,” he said.

There are several ways to help a pet recover from a hormonal surge: mating or castration (neutering). Another way, the most humane and effective, is the use of special preparations.

“When choosing a drug, look at the composition. It should contain two hormones. Because they gently affect the animal’s body. they are much safer than monohormonal ones, because the concentration of the hormone is reduced tenfold. If you use the drops and tablet forms for oral administration, you will certainly know that your pet is getting the correct dose. This does not happen if you use drops in withers – after all, part of the drug remains on the jacket. It is also forbidden to come into contact with the animal, spreading through the subcutaneous layer, because when you touch it, some of the medicine will definitely fall on you, ”the veterinarian recalled.
