Vyacheslav Lebedev, President of the Supreme Court of Russia, said that the country’s withdrawal from the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) did not affect the work of Russian courts. He spoke about this to reporters on the sidelines of a meeting in New Delhi attended by the heads of the high courts of SCO member states. TASS.

The head of the Supreme Court noted that Russia “does not give up” the generally accepted principles and norms of international law.

He added that the main task of the Supreme Court is to ensure that the Russian judiciary is highly professional, impartial and honest, and that everything works for the benefit of the person.

On December 15, 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law allowing the Constitutional Court to completely or partially ignore the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights. On March 16, 2022, Russia was removed from the Council of Europe, thus leaving the jurisdiction of the ECHR. In June, the president signed a law on non-implementation in Russia of ECHR decisions adopted after March 15, 2022.
