The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled for the first time on human rights violations in Abkhazia. This has been officially announced court website.

According to human rights activists, the case handled by the ECtHR concerns the events that took place in Abkhazia in the early 2000s.

The first applicant was injured by the explosion of a grenade: while fishing, a man had decided to use it to knock out a fish. The security forces became aware of the explosion and the Abkhaz was detained.

The man was tortured during the investigation. As a result, the court sentenced him to 12 years in prison for illegal possession of weapons, treason and sabotage. The second applicant also said that he had been forced under torture to confess to charges of explosives and terrorism.

During the consideration of the cases, the ECtHR concluded that the territory of Abkhazia fell under the jurisdiction of both Georgia and Russia. As a result, the ECtHR recognized the realities of human rights violations and ordered the Russian Federation to pay the victims more than 50 thousand euros.
