Scientists have found which trees clean the air best. This has been reported by the University of Gothenburg.

Researchers at the University of Gothenburg collected leaves and needles from eleven different trees growing in the same place in the local botanical garden’s arboretum to analyze what substances they were catching.

“This collection provides a unique opportunity to test many different tree species in similar environmental conditions and with similar exposures to air pollutants,” says Jenny Klingberg, one of the study’s authors. total analyzed 32 different pollutants, some dispersed as micro and nano particulate matter.

“Our analyzes show that different tree species have different abilities to absorb air pollutants. Coniferous trees generally took up more gaseous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons than deciduous trees. Another benefit of conifers is that they clean the air during the winter months when air pollution is usually at its highest. However, hardwoods were significantly better at removing particulate matter from the air due to their larger surface area, while no type of pollution affected the chlorophyll content and photosynthesis ability in leaves.

In conclusion, the authors suggest a combination of different tree species in urban planning for more efficient air purification.
