Nutritionists at Tulane University in the United States have calculated the environmental impact of the now particularly popular paleo and keto diets. The results of the research of scientists have been published. magazine American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The study’s authors compared the carbon footprint of three types of diets: paleo (meat foods, vegetables, fruits, grains and beans are excluded from the diet), keto (keto supporters reject almost all carbohydrates, instead meat and fat), as well as veganism.

According to scientists, the carbon footprint of the above nutrition plans plays a role in increasing global warming. Therefore, it is important to choose the most environmentally friendly food option to combat this.

As part of the study, the scientists used information from the dataField database, which contains information about the carbon footprint of various products. As it turned out, for every 1000 calories consumed on the keto diet, about 3 kg of carbon dioxide, and on the paleo diet – 2.6 kg. The carbon footprint of a vegan diet was only 0.7 kg.
