Scientists from the University of Adelaide have compiled a salad recipe for astronauts on this topic. reported on the official website of the university.
Salad consists of food that can be grown in a spaceship. The researchers used NASA’s recommendations for space nurturing, for which a mathematical model was created. Scientists have used it to evaluate various products.
“There are dozens of plants that can meet the nutritional needs of astronauts. We chose those that contain the maximum amount of necessary substances in the minimum volume and at the same time can be grown in the limited space of the ISS, ”explained the scientists.
As a result, the salad, ideal for space conditions, contained soybeans, poppy seeds, sunflower seeds, barley sprouts, cabbage, peanuts and sweet potatoes.
The researchers also made an imaginary salad that four volunteers tried. The dish, according to them, turned out to be quite edible, and they could eat it every day for a week.
