A team of geneticists from around the world collected and analyzed DNA samples from more than three hundred wild dogs living in the exclusion zone near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The scientists concluded that, unlike the DNA of all other dogs, their genomes acquired a unique structure. TASSCiting the findings of research published in an article published in the journal Science Advances.

The publication says that further study of the genomes of these animals will help ecologists and biologists determine how life under conditions of sustained high radiation load on ecosystems affects the evolution of animal populations and the process of adaptation to living in such an environment. He believes an international team of geneticists led by Timothy Musso, a professor at the University of South Carolina in Colombia (USA).

In addition, geneticists have discovered that over the past decades, fresh genetic material has been constantly entering the gene pool of Chernobyl dog populations, suggesting that humans are constantly introducing new dogs into the exclusion zone. Professor Musso and colleagues emphasize that this feature of Chernobyl dogs should be considered in future studies.
