The Russian Orthodox Church’s Patriarchal Commission for the Protection of Family Affairs, Maternity and Childhood has proposed the introduction of criminal sanctions for inciting or compelling a woman to have an abortion in clinics. Made on application date meeting VI Hippocratic Medical Forum by Commission President Fyodor Lukyanov.
The priest proposed to add to the article of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation on “illegal abortion” a clause providing for punishment for encouraging or forcing a woman to have an abortion.
Lukyanov also proposed increasing the penalty for illegal abortion from 80 thousand rubles. Up to 150 thousand rubles, and the corrective term – from two to five years, and introduces the concept of “criminal abortion”. It has been proposed to mean abortion if the terms of abortion are not complied with for medical or social reasons, including non-clinical and non-compliance with the so-called week of silence by unqualified persons.
