When the communication of a film focuses solely on the performance of the main actress, there is a risk of conveying the idea that it is the only thing worth doing. This happens with ‘Leslie’. Andrea Riseborough’s unexpected Oscar nomination for her work on this film caused everything to revolve around her. It makes sense because instead of an alcoholic mother rejected by her family, she looks gorgeous.
There aren’t many translators available. self-destruction embodied in reliability, caricature, nuances and moderation doing it with it. His crooked face, his injured animal body, his mental and physical surrender. But to ‘Leslie’ she’s not the only one. It would be embarrassing for viewers to suspect that this is just a decent movie with a good performance. Set in a Texas town, Michael Morris’ first film has the calligraphy of very standard American independent cinema. But it’s not a changeable movie. This is notable. There are characters that the director and actors believe in and they are told through them.
It’s nice that she talks about second chances, about guilt, about the families we choose. The cast is impeccable, and it’s no coincidence that comedian Marc Maron is always on the go. How he overcame his addictions, embodied the man who believed in Leslie, seeing Leslie. His comment is moving. In times of cynicism, ‘To Leslie’ also has the ability to be exotic, due to the warmth and optimism that Morris shows his forgotten people.
