Laughing in times of stress is a protective response of the psyche and helps to cope with the discomfort. Stanislav Sambursky, an occupational and clinical psychologist at Anikina’s Clinic, told socialbites.ca about this. He explained how to deal with “tense laughter”.
“Laughing for no reason is a sign of a person prone to neuroses. In moments of anxiety or sadness, such nervous laughter is involuntary. The person does not experience positive emotions and his soul is thus protected. The thing is, laughter helps people deal with an uncomfortable situation. From the spirit point of view, if we smile or laugh, then nothing terrible happens around. Therefore, laughter helps to get rid of stress and reduces the load on the psyche, ”said expert Sambursky.
According to him, nervous smiles occur at the most inopportune times, and in order to cope with them, first of all, it is necessary to determine in which situations laughter occurs.
“Every person has individual triggers. Certain circumstances or feelings must cause involuntary laughter. A conflict, a sense of guilt, tragic news, etc. It could be. Next, “catching” the right mood. The psychologist advised that if you have to face your “trigger” in the near future, you should put yourself in a calm state beforehand.
He noted that a short walk, breathing exercises, and even a glass of water would be beneficial. It is also recommended to scroll through the scenario of what is going on in your head. This will allow you to better focus on events or dialogue, not emotions.
“One more piece of advice: Communicate more and consciously address issues that are undesirable to you. This will allow you to gain stability in various stressful situations, and the pressure of the “trigger” on the psyche will be significantly weakened. So you can take control of your psycho-emotional history, ”explained the expert.
For example, if it is urgent to get emotions under control, turning thoughts into a routine will help: thinking about what’s for dinner, what’s on the table. You can also take something in your hand: turn the handle between your fingers, straighten clothes, change the arrangement of objects on the table. Another option is to leave for a while, retire, calm your nerves, and only then come back in cold blood.
“If none of this helps and emotions take over, it’s worth enlisting the support of an expert. The psychologist will be able to identify the reasons for such a reaction, as well as help you choose options for how to deal with the resulting nervous laughter.
