Russian cosmonauts on the ISS are conducting an experiment on growing a culture of microorganisms. In this respect informs Dmitry Petelin, cosmonaut and TASS’s special correspondent to the International Space Station.

Experimental samples of fungal culture microorganisms isolated from rosemary roots were delivered to the ISS as part of the Cascade experiment aboard the Soyuz MS-23 spacecraft. At the time of transport, they were in a sealed cultivator.

“Seed and nutrient medium were fed to the cultivator for activation, so it was placed in the glove box when the cultivator was turned on to prevent possible spread of harmful microflora at the station,” explains Petelin.

The aim of the experiment is to test the biomass growing regime. The materials will be returned to Earth for analysis in March.
