Peruvian police caught a mummified man between 600 and 800 years old from a man claiming to be his “girlfriend”. It has been reported daily mail.
Julio Cesar Bermejo, a 26-year-old courier, said the mummy had lived in his house for thirty years and even slept in bed with him.
“At home, he sleeps with me in my room. “I take care of him,” said Bermejo in a video that went viral on social media.
Police detained him in Puno, Peru.
Bermejo also said that the mummy’s name was Juanita and that she was his “spiritual friend.” Authorities said the remains later found were actually that of a man.
The courier said that his father brought the mummy home 30-40 years ago, although he was going to give it to the museum. According to him, the family bought it for 2,000 Peruvian soles and “it was a lot of money back then.” M
The remains are well preserved, suggesting they were pre-Hispanic, with an effective mummification practice.
“This is not Juanita, this is Juan,” an expert from the ministry said, adding that this man died at the age of at least 45.
Police found the remains in a cooler bag used for grocery shopping. The body was found in a fetal position, wrapped in bandages, in a maternity bag marked “PedidosYa”.
Bermejo denied trying to sell the mummy and said he carried it with him because his friends wanted to see it.
Ministry of Culture officials said the mummified remains will now remain with them “to preserve and perpetuate this heritage”.
