Parents should create a life program for a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and avoid criticizing his personality. This was told socialbites.ca by Professor Leonid Chutko, head of the Center for Behavioral Neurology, head of the laboratory for correction of mental development and adaptation of the Human Brain Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
“Such a child should not be scolded or criticized. Children with ADHD are not very sensitive to criticism, prohibitions in principle. If a child has done something wrong, it’s important to convey the thought: “You’re fine, but you did it wrong.” So, don’t scold him for his personality, for who he is. This generally applies to healthy children. But a positive pattern of parental behavior towards a child with ADHD is extremely important,” she explained.
It is also very important for children with ADHD to structure time as much as possible so that the child has specific time slots for certain tasks and establishes a schedule.
“People with ADHD find it hard to stick to it, but without a schedule, their life will be in complete chaos. If parents want their kids to get an education, a job later on, have no disabilities, and feel on par with their healthy peers in society, then maintain some sort of routine. Of course, absolute obedience should not be demanded, but indulgence should not be allowed, ”added Chutko.
