Denmark cancels weekend to increase defense budget

The Danish parliament voted to abolish public holidays in the spring to increase spending on the military. Related reports »BBC“.

It was recorded that deputies voted 95 in favor and 68 against to abolish the Day of Great Prayer, a public holiday celebrated since the 17th century.

A government spokesman said canceling the festivities would provide an additional three billion crowns ($427 million) that could be used to boost the defense budget.

About 50,000 protesters gathered outside the parliament building in Copenhagen earlier this month to protest the plan.

Despite this, the Danish government coalition said additional money is needed to increase NATO’s defense budget, which is 2% of GDP by 2030, not until 2033 as previously planned.
