The US Navy has awarded BAE Systems a maintenance and upgrade contract for the USS Nitze (DDG 94) Arleigh Burke-class missile interceptor. It has been reported Defense Post.
According to the publication, the modernization of the destroyer will cost the fleet $145 million.
Under the deal, Nitze will be dry-docked at the company’s Norfolk shipyard and will undergo the preservation of the underwater hull and refurbishment of the accommodation.
BAE Systems will also provide updates for the ship’s Aegis combat system and new command and control equipment.
Work under the contract is scheduled to begin in July 2023.
In addition to Nitze, BAE Systems has embarked on similar work for the USS Lassen (DDG 88) and USS Mustin (DDG 89) at its shipyards in Florida and San Diego.
It was previously reported that the destroyer USS Nitze was deployed by the United States off the northeastern coast of Saudi Arabia to close a gap in the country’s air defense.
A week ago, Saudi Aramco’s oil facilities were attacked from airspace on the northeastern coast of the kingdom.
