A cheetah named Piruz was the only survivor of three cubs born at just 10 months old when he died in a wildlife sanctuary in northeastern Iran in May 2022. Two other puppies born with him also died in the same month.
A state-owned publication in Iran, “Piruz, who was taken to the Central Veterinary Hospital last Thursday due to kidney failure, died after being on dialysis.”
“The loss of Piruz and the inconclusive efforts of the medical team to save the animal in the last few days sadden me and all my colleagues, we apologize to everyone for not being able to save this animal’s life,” said hospital manager Omid Moradi.
According to a 2017 study by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the Asian cheetah, Acinonyx jubatus venaticus It is a critically endangered subspecies of which only about 50 adults remain in Iran.
The fastest land animal in the world, which can reach speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour, once lived in the lands from the eastern parts of India to the Atlantic coast of Senegal.
They are still found in parts of South Africa, but have almost completely disappeared from North Africa and Asia. Since 2001, Iran has taken several measures to protect the endangered Asian cheetah, including a UN-backed conservation program.
The Iranian government has also created protected areas such as Kavir National Park, Turan National Park and Naibandan Wildlife Sanctuary to provide a safe habitat for the Asian cheetah and its prey.
