Afisha has released a new documentary project dedicated to the cultural transformation of Russian cities, the Afisha press service reported. Using the example of Derbent, Kazan, Krasnoyarsk and Novaya Ladoga, the authors describe how the development has changed the social landscape of the entire region. In city planning this is called the “Bilbao effect”.

The authors of The Bilbao Effect note that attractive public spaces have emerged in Russia’s over million cities, tourist centers and areas with few local residents. They are no longer limited to new benches, lanterns and playgrounds, their goal is to transform the design code, create architectural attractions and support the development of the entire infrastructure and economy.

The movie looks at four beautification projects.

First, the refurbishment plan is the sandy Derbent, which has already been recognized as the most ambitious, trendy and controversial project in the architectural circles in recent years.

The second city that the authors of the picture paid attention to was Kazan, where a new embankment of Lake Nizhny Kaban has recently appeared.

The third city where the reconstruction experience is told is Krasnoyarsk. The creators of the Bilbao Effect note that the left bank of the Yenisei River, long familiar to domestic tourism fans, was the city’s hallmark before the embankment on the right emerged.

The fourth project described in the movie is the improvement of Novaya Ladoga. For the reconstruction of the central city street, the authors of the project worked with local residents.

The movie is already available on the YouTube channel “posters“. Afisha Daily content director and Afisha Daily’s editor-in-chief, Trifon Bebutov, served as general producer.
