Teenage deaths from e-cigarettes are associated with lower body weight compared to adults and greater vulnerability to nicotine and other substances due to underdeveloped internal organs. Marine Gambaryan, head of the Center for Tobacco Consumption Prevention and Control of the National Medical Research Center for Treatment and Preventive Medicine of the Russian Ministry of Health, informed socialbites.ca about this.
“The lethal dose of nicotine is about 1mg per kilogram of body weight. To get an overdose of nicotine while smoking regular cigarettes, a teenager would need to smoke several packs, which is unlikely to do. With the help of a vape, this milestone is much easier to overcome. “And in general, their lungs and brains are not yet fully developed. Their organs are more vulnerable.”
In addition, adolescent cases are more resonant. When an adult vaper dies, this habit may not be associated with death, whereas the death of an initially healthy teenager is always striking.
“If we talk about teenagers rather than teenagers, in addition to poisoning, you can die, for example, due to pathologies associated with regular electronic cigarettes. Thus, there was a case in the USA where a 22-year-old man regularly smoked e-cigarettes with high nicotine content for five years and eventually died of a stroke. In fact, there are many such cases among young adults. Sometimes, at least in the United States, it was even possible to prove the guilt of the manufacturer, ”added Gambaryan.
