Scientists from the University of Nevada have identified factors that trigger depressive symptoms during a hangover. The results of the researchers’ work have been published. magazine Addictive behaviors.

A hangover is a collection of unpleasant physical and mental symptoms that can occur after drinking too much alcohol. About 22% of drinkers report experiencing anxiety or depression during a hangover, but these symptoms are poorly understood.

The study involved 139 undergraduate students who filled out an online questionnaire about their mental health, ability to regulate emotions, and their hangover experiences. 39 people from the sample reported experiencing a hangover during the survey.

The authors found that the anxiety experienced by the respondents increased steadily during a hangover. Neither emotion dysregulation nor repetitive negative thinking were associated with hangover anxiety symptoms. However, they increase depressive symptoms.
