Researchers from the University of Tsukuba have proven that the use of gadgets and web applications helps in the fight against excess weight. The results of the scientists’ work were published in the journal nutrients.

In their study, the scientists conducted a meta-analysis of approximately 148 scientific papers on evaluating the effectiveness of using weight loss apps. As it turned out, such services really help people to better control themselves, monitor nutrition, in addition, some applications also provide social support to users. However, the authors noticed that the effectiveness of the techniques decreased over time.

Experts were also able to name the least effective resource in the fight against excess weight – these are thematic online chats. At the same time, the use of smartphones for personal remote consultations with experts had a positive effect.

In future studies, scientists will continue to examine the effects of the practices on overweight people.
