Family of Peters who died in Ukraine work with US Embassy to send body home

The US Embassy in Kiev and the family of American citizen Andrew Peters, who died in Ukraine, are working to have the man’s body returned to his homeland of Marshfield. radio station reports WPR.

Previously recognizedPeters, 26, who fought on the Ukrainian side, died during the fighting in that country on February 16.

“We confirm that American citizens have died in Ukraine. We are in contact with their families and are providing all necessary consular assistance,” WPR quotes a statement from the US State Department.

Andrew Peters grew up in Marshfield, Wisconsin and enlisted in the US Army before graduating high school in 2012. Peters returned from Afghanistan in 2014 and joined the Ukraine International Defense Legion in November.

Andrew’s family said he spoke several languages, including Russian, Ukrainian and French.
