Getting into the elite club of professionals recognized by the Hollywood Academy is no easy task, especially if your job is far from American blockbusters. So throughout history Only 18 Spaniards touched the sky at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. And only one of them did it twice. A certain Pedro Almodóvar.

This is 2023, and following the celebration of the Oscar premiere on March 12, the list could be expanded a bit, thanks to the Spanish-Cuban actress. Ana de Armaswho chooses Oscar Best Actress for her role in ‘Blonde’, where he gave life to Marilyn Monroe. This is the first time a Spanish woman will win in this category. In fact, we only have two statuettes in the acting department, those of Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz (both for best supporting actor and actress).

The film chosen by the Film Academy to represent the country at the most prestigious ceremony on the big screen was ‘Alcarrás’ directed by Carla Simón. Unfortunately, it did not succeed and was excluded from the final competition for the best foreign language film statuette. Curiously, this feature film failed to win a single award at the last Goya awards premiere. It has suffered the same fate in recent years as “Alcarrás”, “El buen patrón”, “La trinchera infinita”, “Campeones”, “Verano 1993” or “Julieta”. In fact, since ‘Mar Adentro’ won in 2004, With his candidacy, only ‘Pain and Glory’ was made.
