Researchers discovered an ancient musical instrument in the south of Vietnam. article about it published in antiquity.
According to experts, this artifact is at least 2000 years old, made from the horn of the ancient Vietnamese Eo culture, whose representatives lived near the Mekong River.
“This string instrument, or cordophone, is one of the earliest examples of such instruments in Southeast Asia,” said Fredeliza Campos, one of the study’s authors. “It bridges the gap between lithophones, the oldest known musical instruments in the region, and more modern instruments. It was supposed to be about 35 cm long and had a hole at one end for the tuning peg. It also had what looked like a stick to support the rope.”
Artifacts were found during excavations at the Go Chua archaeological site in the Long An province of South Vietnam. In addition to the instrument, three identical bronze bells were found, most likely part of some kind of burial.
“It is well known that music played an important role in the early cultures of this region. There is a striking similarity between the works we examined and some string instruments still played by the Vietnamese. This suggests that traditional Vietnamese music originated in the prehistoric past,” the authors summarize.
