Scientists from the University of Hong Kong have shown that fat-targeted nanoparticles containing thyroid hormone lower blood cholesterol levels and reduce atherosclerosis in mice. The results of the research were published in the journal Nature Communication.
In a new study, scientists developed nanoparticles that selectively transport the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine into adipose tissue. The scientists tested the drug on obese mice. The experiment showed that triiodothyronine nanoparticles can convert “bad” white fat into “good” brown fat, which can generate heat and burn calories. Additionally, the mice significantly reduced their blood cholesterol levels and reduced signs of atherosclerosis.
Thyroid hormones have the potential to treat obesity, but their large number of side effects (muscle atrophy, bone loss, heart problems) make their use impossible. The work of scientists could lead to the creation of the first anti-obesity drug based on thyroid hormone.
