Although the main danger of pancakes is their calorie content, large portions of the product can also harm heart health. Natalia Tananakina, Candidate of Medical Sciences and endocrinologist at Medicina JSC, told socialbites.ca about this.

According to the expert, besides the high calorie content, pancakes have a high glycemic index, so overweight people should avoid them at Maslenitsa.

“Even pancake breakfast isn’t the best option. After all, two pancakes with butter and jam contain about 520 calories, which is a quarter of the daily allowance. We are used to eating a lot of pancakes for full satiety, and this is unhealthy, ”said the expert.

She noted that using rice or almond flour instead of wheat flour in pancakes will help lower calories and increase dietary fiber. Instead of jam or condensed milk as a filling, it is better to use sour cream, fish, caviar and other unsweetened additives.

“Large portions of pancakes can also harm heart health. Excess fat raises cholesterol levels, which can lead to cardiovascular disease. Use a non-stick spray or vegetable oil when cooking to reduce the amount of saturated fat, says Dr. Natalia Tananakina.

At the same time, pancakes, according to the endocrinologist, are rich in protein and calcium, due to the presence of milk and eggs in its composition. It also contains plenty of potassium. Its level can be increased by adding or stuffing bananas to the mix.

“Consumption of pancakes with healthy additives in moderation does not harm the body. But it is important to remember that even on Shrove Tuesday the diet should be varied and balanced, ”concluded the candidate of medical sciences.
