Japanese man steals more than 1,000 holiday cards from mailboxes to ‘get out of loneliness’ ask news. The man is now facing jail time.

According to local media, the 38-year-old resident of Hyogo Province became a suspect in the theft of 1,000 New Year’s cards. He was detained on 14 January after breaking the mailboxes of an apartment building. The man admitted his guilt and said that he went to crime because he wanted to escape from loneliness.

The man was released, but was re-arrested two days later after officers were told that a man matching the suspect’s description had been seen in town throwing postcards into mailboxes.

However, police believe the detainee had a different reason. The truth is that every New Year’s card issued by Japan Post has a six-digit number on the back. These are the lottery numbers for the national draw in mid-January.

Winners qualify for a variety of prizes: $225 worth of certificates or free items. Whether the Japanese won anything was not reported.
