The vast majority of respondents (91%) celebrate Maslenitsa. socialbites.ca learned the results of a survey conducted by IC Rosgosstrakh and the Cozy Home chain of stores about how Russians celebrate Maslenitsa and what traditions they observe on this holiday.
Thus, 36% of respondents said that they welcomed the Shrovetide week at the table with their loved ones. 15% believe Maslenitsa is an opportunity to eat pancakes.
Most of the respondents (82%) stated that pancakes are mostly eaten at Maslenitsa. More than half (54%) go to visit or receive guests. Attendance at folk festivals is only 37%, and participation in traditional games and entertainment is even less – 13%.
Another tradition for Maslenitsa is the burning of a statue. This tradition is followed by 44% of respondents. But the majority – 53% – prefer to bake pancakes on Maslenitsa two to five times. 9% of respondents bake pancakes every day on vacation.
Russians call sour cream (58%), caviar (46%), condensed milk (43%) and jam (34%) among their favorite fillings.
As for the perception of holiday, 20% of Maslenitsa consider it an ordinary holiday, 19% a pagan ritual, and the majority – 60% consider Maslenitsa a cultural event.
