Scientists have created a sensor that allows you to automatically monitor for signs of overwork. This was reported by the press service of the RNF.

Professional athletes constantly monitor their health and are under medical supervision. It is important that they do not overload the body without serious need, as this negatively affects athletic form. Signs of overwork can be traced by organic molecules in sweat and blood. Therefore, glucose and lactate are considered good markers because deviations in the levels of these substances indicate illness or exhaustion.

Scientists from Moscow State University MV Lomonosov developed a biosensor to monitor the level of glucose and lactate in human sweat, so it does not require a blood test. It is based on the Prussian blue pigment, which is compounds of iron and blue cyan. At the same time, it was not the saturated color of the pigment that was important for the chosen task, but its chemical properties. It is sensitive to hydrogen peroxide, so it can be used to convert the chemical signal about peroxide concentration into an electrical signal going to the electrode.

However, Prussian blue dissolves under the influence of hydroxyl ions found in the human body and sweat, which are formed during the reduction of hydrogen peroxide. The nanoparticles were coated with nickel hexacyanoferrate to prevent their dissolution.

Experiments with human blood and sweat samples have shown that the sensor detects glucose and lactate concentrations in both fluids with an accuracy of 99%, regardless of their concentration in the blood. Ready data can be transferred to a smartphone via Bluetooth, and a special application analyzes them without the participation of a doctor.

The authors hope that their development will assist athletes in training.
