A number of environmental experts said major international companies are failing to meet their commitments to reduce harmful emissions. In this respect informs AFP.

The agency refers to analytical reports by Carbon Market Watch and the NewClimate Institute. Over the past few years, under increasing pressure from shareholders, governments and consumers, companies have sought to implement strategies to reduce their carbon (carbon dioxide) emissions. According to UN experts, by 2030 it will be necessary to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent and reach “net zero” – and artificially remove all excess carbon from the atmosphere. “Clean zero” is the name adopted in Western journalism to stop the emission of carbon dioxide or compensate for one’s emissions by absorbing them from the atmosphere.

According to experts, 22 companies that have made such commitments actually plan to reduce their collective emissions by only 15 percent by 2030.

“The vast majority of these companies are not delivering on their promises,” said the Corporate Climate Responsibility Monitor. According to Carbon Market Watch, many companies are making vague and misleading “clean zero” promises to give their brands a greener image while continuing to run their business as usual.

Shipping giant Maersk scored best overall, with its plan to be carbon neutral by 2040 deemed “fair enough”. The climate plans of eight corporate giants, including Apple, Google, Microsoft and steel company ArcelorMittal, were found to be “satisfactory in good faith”.

The plans of 11 major companies, including American Airlines, Samsung Electronics, Carrefour grocery chain and meat processing giant JBS, were considered unscrupulous by experts. Not all of these 4 companies agreed with this assessment.
