There are three questions that must be met in order to have a pet in Spain, two are mandatory and one is common sense. The first problem is that the animal in question is not considered an invasive species and meerkats are not counted. Secondly, they are not endangered and currently not meerkats. Finally, we have the third, which is the application of logic and common sense. A companion animal is an entity that belongs or should belong to a living species whose individuals have interacted with humans for centuries. It is clear that meerkats do not fit the latter. However, although the first two questions are mandatory, it is not mandatory to apply this third question. Therefore, legally and in the absence of new regulations enacted, it is legal to own them. Another thing is ethically, because after all, having a meerkat in a house is real bullshit.
A neighbor called me to say he bought a meerkat. She says she doesn’t want a dog or cat, but needs to feel like an animal is waiting for her when she gets home. Is it legal to have a meerkat as a pet?
