The Pentagon said the object was hit at the direction of US President Joe Biden and based on the recommendations of the Department of Defense and the military command of the F-16 fighter jet, at which an AIM9x missile was fired. The defense ministry noted that the unidentified aircraft was at an altitude of about 20,000 feet (12 km) in US airspace.

On February 12, Representative Elissa Slotkin, a member of the US House of Representatives, said the military was tracking a flying object over Lake Huron on the Canadian border. After that, American authorities reported that pilots of the US Air Force and National Guard shot down the object.
